Have a question about how the TVTropes wiki works? No one knows this community better than the people in it, so ask away! Ask the Tropers is the page you come to when you have a question burning in your brain and the support pages didn't help.
It's not for everything, though. For a list of all the resources for your questions, click here. You can also go to this Directory thread
for ongoing cleanup projects.
Ask the Tropers is for:
- • General questions about the wiki, how it works, and how to do things.
- • Reports of problems with wiki articles, or requests for help with wiki articles.
- • Reports of misbehavior or abuse by other tropers.
Ask the Tropers is not for:

Ask the Tropers:
resolved Is this a valid example of Playing Against Type? Web Original
So someone added this to Etra chan saw it!:
- Playing Against Type: In this episode, Azami, who usually plays an Obnoxious In-Law, gets the role of the abused daughter-in-law and her usual role goes to Akane. Yuzuriha is also cast as a nerdy girl, which is usually Tsutsuji's role, and Tsutsuji herself gets Yuzuriha's usual role as a Crusading Lawyer.
As far as I know, the trope seems to cover only actors that play against what they're usually cast for, and don't include any in-universe examples. (For context, Etra chan saw it! has the characters as actors In-Universe).
Edited by mickey96resolved Web Video series in Creator Namespace Web Original
I came across the page Josh Scorcher, which (putting aside some cleanup with regards to a since-removed ROCEJ wick, some real-life troping and misuse that I've already noticed) seems like it's more suited to the Web Video namespace than Creator, particularly with how it already has several subpages that Creator pages are only allowed to have for tropes regarding their works (such as a YMMV page).
I'm guessing that moving the namespace requires copying the content on Creator/ over to Web Video/ and then cutlisting the Creator/ copy, but the page has got so large that I don't want to immediately jump to doing so without fully knowing what I'm doing. What is normally done in this situation?
Edited by Akriloth2160resolved Website page with no examples Web Original
I was hitting the random media button, just browsing different pages, and came across this page for Enigma Ingame. The page has no examples on it, and doesn't even really seem to be a tropable work, from what I can glean. Should this be cut?
resolved Usage of outdated "Catchphrase" trope in regards to VTubers Web Original
I was just making my rounds and I saw that several examples for the no longer viable Catchphrase trope were listed for Filian. That got me wondering, for streamers that do have catchphrases/things they tend to say often, is that tropeable? Should each of the examples be removed?
resolved Leftover A To M on WMG/DeathBattleOneOnOneMatchSuggestionsAToM Web Original
DeathBattleOneOnOneMatchSuggestionsAToM is a page of entries that has been sorted to A-F or G-M. To cutlist, assuming every entry has been sorted to their respective pages?
Edited by inbeforedashresolved Can somebody help me move an article I made Web Original
I'm new to the Wiki and I (and a couple of other friends) decided to make an article for a Webseries we like, but while trying to move the Page after finishing it, I accidentally created a duplicate of the page under a different Namespace, when I should've instead asked for help from the Admins.
Can an Admin here delete the page for WebVideo/ROYN, and then move Sandbox/ROYN to the Web Video namespace (or perhaps even Web Animation, if it fits better)?
Edited by GammaRaulresolved Stub: WebVideo.Lucas Web Original
This page only has three examples and a header that's not even a paragraph long. Most of the examples on the page were zero-context and were commented-out. It's most recent edit (the first edit in years) was to cut a disambigged trope. Do we cut this?
Edited by supernintendo128resolved How does this site handle plagiarism of its own pages? Web Original
I recently stumbled across the page for Sonic: Into, Across and Beyond!. From what I can tell, it's a new fanwork (and troper work — this will come up later) heavily inspired by Reddit art project Funkinverse, which has a very similar premise and use of certain adaptation tropes, just with a different fandom.
However, I noticed something off about the pages: a lot of text in the former is copied from the latter with minor alterations to accommodate new names, tropes, or settings. I know we don't like plagiarism from offsite sources, but is it also bad form to do the same with our own pages?
(For what it's worth, the page also appears to have been written by a troper who has been reported on ATT before for Auto-Erotic Troping, as this is another one of their works.)
Edited by TrocyteVresolved What namespace should Dropout be in? Web Original
So you may know that last August CollegeHumor officially rebranded as Dropout, like the streaming service they've run since 2018. I've moved their page on this wiki over to Dropout along with the subpages since it was about time. However, when I was indexing Dropout in the Other Sites index, I put it under Platforms and that got me thinking "Should I have made the Dropout page under Platform instead of Creator?". To be fair when the rebrand first happened the Platform namespace didn't exist yet so it was always in the back of my mind to use the Creator namespace for their page.
Since Dropout is also production company that makes their own shows, would it still be appropriate to keep them in Creator like Netflix, Hulu etc. or should it be in Platform since they're yet another digital platform? I don't mind having to replace all the wicks I've put out so far if I end up moving it to Platform.
resolved Can Hypocrite apply to the author of a work or just its characters? Web Original
For instance, say the author of a work clearly in an author's note expresses contempt for a certain trope or story beat, but then in the work itself they use that same trope or story beat straight without irony or deconstruction when necessary to suit the narrative.
EDIT: If not, is there a more appropriate trope to use?
Edited by Raxisresolved Potential edit war? Web Original
On this page of this RWBY episode:
- Super N 9999 added a "Nice Job Fixing It Villain!" entry about Neo.
- gjjones deemed it as potential misuse, so they took it down.
- SuperN9999 re-adds it back, with the justification of the entry being present in Neo's character page, despite reiterating that it was previously removed due to misuse.
Do we have a concrete Edit War here?
Edited by skan123resolved Adding an entry to Sugar Wiki Web Original
I've been wondering how to add an entry to Sugar Wiki. Specifically, I've been wanting to create a Sugar Wiki counterpart to Villainous Travel Agency on the Darth Wiki.
I am allowed to create a page for it instantly, or do I have to talk the idea over with mods first?
resolved Launching a Work in General Web Original
I stumbled upon this animated short here:
https://youtu.be/RubSLGTrdOA?si=IJrngDNumbufTsX6
If I do have the time, how would I launch this as a Work to be viewed?
Do I launch it like Tropes, or something different is needed?
resolved Should this be TRS'd: AmericaWonWorldWarII Web Original
The trope description meanders along far too many tangents to what should be a description of the trope in fiction itself...feels like most of this should be moved to an Analysis page?
Edited by DarthWalrusresolved Monkey Wrench Web Original
Needing to make sure before I do anything. The latest episode of Monkey Wrench is available on Newgrounds and will be coming to youtube on the 30th. Since it is available for all already via newgrounds, is it safe for me to make a recap page for the latest episode?
resolved How does one redirect Video examples away from a defunct page? Web Original
This is a problem I've had for a while now, there are a bunch of video examples scattered around the site with Atun Shei Films as their media source. This is a page that I oversaw the splitting of into Atun-Shei Films, Checkmate, Lincolnites!, The Witchfinder-General and Frozen '50s Man, meaning that not only to these examples need to be corrected from the defunct page but they need to be overwritten to link to the more specific media source. As far as I can tell, though, only the person who uploaded a video example can edit it, and I'm not even entirely sure how to access the Video examples page for a work which no longer exists. What should be done about this?
resolved An example of a possible non-existed work Web Original
While I was moving an example from Cliffhanger.Web Original. I just stumbled upon seeing what appears to be an example of a non-existed work where it claims that it ends with a famous cliffhanger. Here's an example.
- Space Boyfriend ends in quite the famous one. Ben finally confesses his love to Veronica, and the series was canceled before she could respond.
I have no clue what Space Boyfriend is or who those characters are. Did anyone know this Web Original?
resolved "A Bench In Stiix", a work without a link? Web Original
Found a Web Original called A Bench In Stiix. I asked the page's creator for a link because I can't find one on the page. They didn't respond.
I tried searching the title online. The only result was linking to the TV Tropes page.
What should I do? The examples seem contextualized enough.
So I made a page for Super Mario Odyssey: Hide and Seek the other day, and then I thought of something. I was going to put the series into the FanWorks.Super Mario Bros page... only to be confused for quite a while, because the series itself is based on a mod for the game, so do I put it in ROM hacks or Web Video?
I have no idea.
Edit: I just realise that I thought about it too much, please ignore this.
